Prior to 1540, the sleepy village of Kittarranglan on the Isle
of Skye had few visitors despite its pretty and sheltered anchorage. However, in
1540 the determination of James V to rule all of Scotland, including the
Hebrides, resulted in him sailing the uncharted waters surrounding Skye wielding
his authority as he went.
The royal fleet of 12 ships pulled into the safe anchorage of
Kittarranglan and it is here the King landed and set up court. From then on the
village became known as Portree ('Port an Righ' - Port of the King) and
became a place of some importance.
With its gaily painted buildings and 19th century Telford pier
it is one of the most picturesque ports in the north west of Scotland.
Historically the harbour has played host to a number of famous
characters throughout history, including Bonnie Prince Charlie, James Boswell,
Dr Johnson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Turner and Tennyson.
Equally as historical, having been built at the turn of the 19th
century, is the terrace in which the Harbour View Seafood Restaurant is
situated.
Originally the cottages would have been thatched and been the homes of local fishermen - a convenient location with only a short step
away to their boats in the harbour.
A meal at the Harbour View Seafood Restaurant is therefore not
only a wonderful culinary occasion but also a truly historical
journey.
